Notes on effective research

There is a whole variety of ways to research, you can use books, magazines, journals, websites, social media pages and many others.

What is primary research?

Primary research is any type of research that you go out and collect yourself. Examples include surveys, interviews, observations, and ethnographic research (Ethnography is an extremely broad area with a great variety of practitioners and methods. However, the most common ethnographic approach is participant observation as a part of field research. The ethnographer becomes immersed in the culture as an active participant and records extensive field notes.) A good researcher knows how to use both primary and secondary sources in her writing and to integrate them in a cohesive fashion.

What is secondary research?

Secondary research is also known as desk research and it involves the summary, collation and synthesis of existing research rather than primary research where data is  collected from, for example research subjects or experiments and at other times, it may be the only research technique used. It is a lot easier to find a secondary research source than a primary source. This is also why the secondary research approach is much more commonly used.
