The Ethics of Retouching Notes

Cosmetic retouching

  • Fashion in particular. Has it created a false perception of beauty. I personally think it has.
  • France has recently made it law so that companies/other individuals have to have a disclaimer on the ad/image if it has been enhanced/airbrush via photoshop. ‘All commercial photos that have been digitally retouched will now have to bear a label in accordance with a new French law that aims to combat unrealistic body images and eating disorders.’
  • ASA = Advertising Standards Authority
  • Code of Ethics
  • Cecil Beaton – Considered the original fashion photographer.
  • Dove Evolution
  • Dave Hill (The Dave hill effect)
  • The National Press Photographers Association

Libel

  • Libel = A false and malicious published statement that damages somebody’s reputation.

Decency Law

  • Decency = Behaviour or an attitude that conforms to the commonly accepted standards of what is right and respectable.

Things to know

  • When Shooting, use model release forms. This gives consent for the model to agree to the photoshoot and publishing of an image. Same goes with photoshop and other enhancing methods.
