Cultural Diversity (Iran)

Traditional Clothing

The traditional men’s garment included the Shalvar, and Jameh combination, often with a wide belt called Kamarband, from which English gets the word “cummerbund”. Headdresses were also worn by men in traditional wear, known as the Sarband. Long robes and loin cloths were also worn by the women and men in Persia

Food

Typical Iranian main dishes are combinations of rice with meat (such as lamb, chicken, or fish), vegetables (such as onions and various herbs), and nuts.

Rice – The usage of rice, at first a specialty of Safavid Empire’s court cuisine, evolved by the end of the 16th century CE into a major branch of Iranian cookery. Traditionally, rice was most prevalent as a major staple item in northern Iran and the homes of the wealthy, while bread was the dominant staple in the rest of the country.

Art

Persian art or Iranian art has one of the richest art heritages in world history and has been strong in many media including architecture, painting, weaving, pottery, calligraphy, metalworking and sculpture. In ancient times the surviving monuments of Persian art are notable for a tradition concentrating on the human figure (mostly male, and often royal) and animals. Persian art continued to place larger emphasis on figures than Islamic art from other areas, though for religious reasons now generally avoiding large examples, especially in sculpture.

Relgion

Sunni and Shi’i are the two largest branches of Islam, with the overwhelming majority of Iranians practicing Shi’i Islam. About 90 percent of Iranians practice Shi’ism, the official religion of Iran. By contrast, most Arab states in the Middle East are predominantly Sunni.

Environment/Landscape

Geographically, Iran is located in West Asia. Its mountains have helped to shape both the political and the economic history of the country for several centuries. With an area of 1,648,000 square kilometres (636,000 square mile), Iran ranks eighteenth in size among the countries of the world.
